Last month we learned the hard truth about candles (you can read that post here).
So this month we wanted to give you the tools to create your own! A safer alternative. We are all for essential oils in the diffuser, but there is just something about the cozy glow of a candle… can’t beat it.
Here’s what you will need :
Essential oils
(Our favorites come from Young Living : https://www.youngliving.com/us/en/. For this DIY, we used Grapefruit, Bergamot and Cedarwood oils.)
Wooden spoon
Clothespin
Vessel (I used a thrifted brass container)
Step 1 : Prepare your vessel. You can use a little hot glue to attach the wick to the bottom of the vessel if you’d like (not required). Hold the wick in place with a clothespin so it doesn’t move when you pour the wax.
Step 2 : Place your heat-resistant pitcher directly on your stove top.
Melt 4 cups of wax over medium heat, stirring often until all the clumps are gone.
Step 3 : Remove from heat and add 50 drops of pure essential oils.
(I used 20 drops of grapefruit, 20 drops of bergamot and 10 drops of cedarwood)
Stir!
Step 4 : Allow your candle to cure for 24 hours before removing the clothes pin and trimming.
Step 5 : After at least 24 hours, remove the clothes pin, trim the wick, and enjoy your clean, cozy candle.
Another alternative for clean, homemade candles is rolling your own beeswax! Here’s a kit that we use and love : https://rb.gy/qw7l8t
We hope this is helpful and that you feel excited to try something new! It’s an incredibly cathartic process to make candles and feels so good to use something you made with your own hands while knowing exactly what’s in it! If you try either of these methods, we’d love to see! Tag us on instagram @freedandflourishingco.
